When our director joined Peel Ports Medway in 1995, the entire IT estate amounted to a handful of computers and a single server. By the time he left in 2022, he had personally designed and managed a network spanning 50 buildings, over 60 servers, and more than 250 networked clients.

John Bushnell’s career spans nearly three decades at the operational heart of enterprise IT. As Network Services Project Manager at Peel Ports Medway from 1995 to 2022, he was responsible for one of the most sustained infrastructure evolution programmes in the UK ports sector.
He arrived to find 10 computers and a single server. He left having designed, built, and managed a network of extraordinary scale — 50 buildings interconnected, more than 60 servers in production, and upwards of 250 clients dependent on the infrastructure he had created. The final chapter of his tenure was the most technically demanding: consolidating that entire estate into a centralised, high-efficiency WAN-style data centre.
